We have a solid surface countertop in a retail installation where we would like to have a flip-up section of countertop.  If we have two 1/2" layers of SS making up the counter, can we mortise a hinge into this and screw it in?  We are looking at using a soss concealed hinge for strength, but the hinge would be inset only 1/8" from the edge.  Is this getting too thin?

Any info will be appreciated-

Sarah

Sarah,

Soss hinges will not work. SS flip tops are very heavy and do not hold up well. We always recommended a craw under or a swing door with a top on it.

Dani's right.

Find a laminate equivalent to your solid surface and use that as your flap.

Do not even think about soss hinges - I've been there and I'm never going back!....
